IFFR Pro Awards 2022

02 February 2022

The Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 2 February marked the close of the IFFR Pro Days 2022. “Organising this edition of IFFR Pro Days was in many ways more of a challenge than the year before,” said IFFR industry head Marit van den Elshout. “The scale of the challenge allowed us to target our focus with a powerful streamlined programme” she continued.

Rotterdam Lab welcomed 73 emerging international film producers from 37 different countries online for a four-day intensive training workshop. Five IFFR Pro Dialogues were hosted on the future of the film industry whilst the Pro Hub offered a programme of networking and mentorship to filmmakers selected for the edition. The 39th edition of CineMart offered an online platform to 28 projects in development, including seven BoostNL projects and five Immersive. In total, seven awards were handed out.

“Our five IFFR Pro Dialogue sessions looked beyond the “new normal” of the pandemic to dream of what the “new possible” could be, so it seems fitting that our IFFR Pro Award winners represent such exciting emerging talent. Helping outstanding cinema come to fruition is, when it’s all said and done, the most valuable service we can offer.”

Jury: Babak Jalali, Jelena Mitrovic and Elena Kotová

Special mention: Love #NoFilter, Mikael Bundsen, produced by Kjellson & Wik (Sweden)
Report: “We,  the  jury,  decided  to  award  a  special  mention  to  a  project  which  reflects  with  humour  on millennials and the complications of their lives, as they try to find a balance which seems far more problematic than it did for previous generations.”

Winner: Leave the Door Open, Judita Gamulin, produced by Eclectica (Croatia)
Report: “The  award goes  to  a  film  which looks  at  the  everyday  interactions  and  lives  of  contemporary  European  families,  set  within  the confines of a well-known superstore. We came to a unanimous decision based on our connection to a very unusual and fresh story and our belief that it will be told impressively in the hands of this young  filmmaker.”

Jury: Annamaria Lodato, Julie Savary, Boelie Vis and Erik Glijnis

Winner: Nightsong, Maya Da-Rin, produced by Tamanduá Vermelho & Still Moving (Brazil/France)
Jury report: “Rural, indigenous family, and the devil are words we heard a lot during our sessions with directors and producers of the 23 original projects of the CineMart and Boost NL selection. Stories about breaking boundaries, diversity, migration and social acceptance.  One of the stories that stood out and resonated with us is about a changing landscape. An urgent universal message, in a strong visual, auditory and also dreamy way. It issues biodiversity, nature, women of different generations, changing land, changing culture and the past.”

IFFR Young Selectors Award

IFFR Young Selectors are creative and ambitious Rotterdammers who offer film tips, curate events and promote the festival to local audiences. For this edition, they’ve chosen the CineMart title they’d most like to see come to fruition, based on the Spotlight presentations. The project receives a €2,500 prize.

Jury: Nica Bol and Zoë van der Kust

Winner: Love on Trial, Koji Fukada, produced by knockonwood Inc. & Survivance (Japan/France)
Report: “We believe this film will provide a hidden insight into the world of pop on the other side of the world. When we listen to the music, do we know the story behind it? Considering these pop stars are about our age, how different would it be if we were born there? Touching on gender controlled power and obeying judicial pressure VS living your life, this is a film we can’t wait to see.”
