HBF Harvest at IFFR 2018

Seven feature films that were supported by the Hubert Bals Fund are part of the programme of the 47th IFFR. Four of these films come to Rotterdam after premieres at prestigious international festivals such as Cannes, Venice and Sundance, three productions will celebrate their world premieres at IFFR.

Three HBF-supported films are competing in the Hivos Tiger Competition. Sultry - Marina Meliande’s solo-debut - is set during the run-up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It shows the effects of this enormous event and an oppressive heat, both completely taking over the city. In 2016 Meliande participated in IFFR’s consultancy and training programme BoostNL with this project. The sparkling Nervous Translation by Shireen Seno was pitched at CineMart during IFFR 2014. The film follows a young Filipino girl in her own world, that is at times confusing, but also a little magical. The Reports on Sarah and Saleem by Muayad Alayan was co-produced with the Dutch production company KeyFilm. The title refers to its protagonists: Jewish Sarah and Palestinian Saleem, who have a dangerous affair with which they risk much more than just their marriages.

Rungano Nyoni’s slightly absurdist first feature film I Am Not A Witch premiered in Cannes in the Spring of 2017 and has had a very successful festival run since then, including screenings at Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. The adventures of this young Zambian witch can be seen in the Limelight section at IFFR. Also selected in Limelight is A Man of Integrity by Iranian master Mohammad Rasoulof, that asks how one can stick to principles in a society that is corrupt to the bone. It premiered in Cannes as well, where it won the Un Certain Regard prize. Both I Am Not A Witch and A Man of Integrity will be released in Dutch cinemas in 2018.

Coming to Rotterdam straight from Sundance is Sebastian Hofmann’s Tiempo compartido, a satire that follows the struggle of two paranoid men against the ever-smiling staff of an all-inclusive resort. Hofmann’s debut film Halley competed in the Hivos Tiger Competition in 2013. This second feature is a contender for the Big Screen Award at IFFR and is a co-production with Amsterdam-based Circe Film. Los versos del olvido is another Dutch co-production, this time with Lemming Film. The roots of director Alireza Khatami and this story lie in Iran, but the team was forced to move the production to a South American setting, making its view on the politics of memory even more universal. This magical-realist film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and will be screened in the thematic programme A History of Shadows at IFFR.

A History of Shadows

A sprawling thematic programme that deals with the ways in which cinema revisits and re-evaluates the past and the position of history’s losers.
