Festival Food Tips: Breakfast, coffee & lunch

As Rotterdam lacks a Tiffany’s (fun fact: Tiffany in New York only started selling breakfast since 2017), we’ll settle for sipping our first coffee (of many) and nibbling a pain au chocolat or croissant in de Doelen. Jordy’s Bakery stand serves a nice breakfast with toast, croissant, cheese, butter and a boiled egg for 6 euros. Pro-tip for IFFR pro-visitors: do try the espresso car on the third floor of de Doelen. Other great coffee places: Lebkov near the central station, Bagels & Beans, Floor and Stadsbrasserie on Schouwburgplein.

Bertman’s, on the same Schouwburgplein, has a great breakfast menu (kimchi and egg, anyone?), with lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. They also do brunch, lunch, drinks, snacks and dinner, so I suspect you’ll end up there more often during the festival.

We heard from a reliable source that Bas Bakt, a bakery near Cinerama, makes a pretty good flat white. When heading to Kino, drink coffee at... Kino! But not before you have visited the tiny bakery across the street from this cinema, named Das Brot. Delicious German-style sourdough bread, pretzels and more – straight from the oven. This is also the home of the original Tiger-logo bun.

A bit further down the road is Laurensius, a true hidden gem. It’s a friendly French bistro/creperie that also makes great galettes. Great for lunch and good coffee too. Oh, and they serve tea and madeleines for a real Proust-feel.

When heading South, Rolph’s Deli near Lantaren Venster is the place to go for lavish American style eggs and pancakes. They even serve a latte covered in 24 karat gold, in case you’re looking for Instagram-worthy stuff. Otherwise, have a bouillabaisse for lunch at Bar Pulpo in the Foodhallen across the street. Or take one bridge further, to Katendrecht, for a super tasty grilled cheese sandwich at Kopi Soesoe or Kate’s shaksuka. There’s coffee everywhere in area too – thank goodness!
