BoostNL selection 2022–23

12 July 2022

BoostNL brings Dutch projects together with international ones – those supported by our Hubert Bals Fund – to create a unique international platform for co-development. IFFR collaborates with the Holland Film Meeting (HFM), the industry event at the Netherlands Film Festival which takes place from 21 – 30 September 2022, to run the bespoke five-month programme. Eight new projects have been selected for this edition.

The three-day HFM Market for industry professionals consists of pre-recorded pitch presentations, one-to-one meetings (online and on-site) and the final HFM Awards for all the projects. HFM’s online format allows accessibility for a broad spectrum of screenwriters, filmmakers and producers in the early stages of the filmmaking process to explore the international potential of their projects. The BoostNL projects then enjoy a tailor-made programme which focuses on script and story development, concluding at IFFR 2023.

BoostNL selection

This year, student Oscar-winning producers Eva Verweij and Loes Komen (Room for Film) present Nicole Jachmann’s rites-of-passage project The Part of the Day When You’re Not Here, while fellow Dutch production house Family Affair Films presents another coming-of-age drama, On the Edge of the Lake by Hyo Soon Kaag. Other Dutch projects are Volya Films’ black comedy Grushka, directed by Marta Partalore and Wiebe van den Ende’s intriguingly titled dark dramedy Cameron and How to Never Outshine a Bride.

From Nepal comes Abinash Bikram Shah’s LGBTQ+themed Elephants in the Fog, produced by Underground Talkies Nepal, while Chilean director Carolina Moscoso offers up her archive-based documentary Nunca seré policía. Other projects are Pènc 13 directed by Selly Raby Kane and produced by Lunek Productions (Senegal) and by Big World Cinema (South Africa) and the Brazilian slavery-themed coming-of-age period drama project Quatro Meninas directed by Karen Suzane and Clara Ferrer. The international projects selected were all supported by the Hubert Bals Fund in the autumn 2021 development round.
