As a novelist, actress/screenwriter for François Ozon (Sous le sable, 8 femmes) and director (her harrowing debut Dans ma peau (2002), in which she plays a self-mutilating woman), Marina de Van is fearless, always eager to deal with taboos and expose herself. Mostly home-made and shot under the radar, Ma nudité ne sert à rien is a brave self-portrait of de Van as a forty-something wandering soul, asking herself about her work, body and relationships in the age of dating apps and one-night stands.

As the title suggests, de Van bares everything, but her nudity is more mysterious than indecent: it’s the main special effect in a very moving, obsessive film that blurs fiction and documentary. Let’s contradict the artist and say that her nudity means something. It’s a mask for her, and a mirror for her own fears and fantasies regarding love, lust and connecting with people.
