Masterclass Samson Wong

Samson Wong is the visual effects supervisor on Shadow, the latest film by Chinese master Zhang Yimou. During this masterclass, he will give a look behind the VFX scenes, examining the making of Shadow and a large number of Hollywood productions he has worked on.

Samson Sing Wun Wong graduated in 2007 from the Vancouver Film School, where he did a course in 'Foundation Visual Art + Design' and '3D Animation + Visual Effects'. He then started work at the FX companies Image Engine and later Digital Domain, where he worked on dozens of major Hollywood films, including The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Transformers and Twilight.

With Shadow, he went a step further and was put in charge of the entire FX process. Under the watchful eye of director Zhang Yimou, with whom Wong also worked in 2018 on the effects for the spectacular closing ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Wong made use of visual elements for this epic war story referring back to centuries-old painting techniques. This won him a Golden Horse Award, the Chinese equivalent of the Oscars. In his masterclass, he will look in depth at his work on Shadow and other productions.
