IFFR 2018
The wunderkinder of current Tamil Nadu cinema found their way into the industry by making shorts released via the net. Mind you, this also happens in the US (e.g. horror's latest hope, Swedish-born David Sandberg) – but maybe not in as systematic a fashion as in Tamil Nadu. A key figure in all this is Karthik Subbaraj, who himself came to prominence through shorts and keeps making and producing these alongside his highly successful work in features.
With Aviyal, he unleashed his second omnibus project on Tamil audiences (after Bench Talkies – The First Batch, 2015) featuring thrills and laughs with (among others) unheard-of sex, a brawl-happy film crew and family relationship problems of the more sensual kind. A true roller-coaster ride of moods and boasting work by two of the hottest talents in town: Alphonse Putharen and Lokesh Kanagaraj (Metropolis, 2017)!
