In collaboration with Dutch cultural centre De Balie, IFFR will host South Korean filmmaker Kim Kyungmook as he delivers De Balie’s 21st Freedom Lecture. Impressively productive given his tender age, Kim Kyungmook (32) has already made a name for himself with his fearless portrayals of marginalised groups navigating complex socio-political terrain. Kyungmook explores what it means to be branded undesirable in the eyes of the state, and the isolation that comes with it. In the lecture, Kyungmook will speak on the importance of giving the unheard a voice, and what it means to generate societal impact through film and images. The Freedom Lecture is made possible by vfonds and Stichting Democratie en Media.
