Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s incredibly fertile career bears the mark of an artist who, whilst being politically and socially conscious, seamlessly creates a realm beyond the one immediately visible to the naked eye. In his films, Weerasethakul speaks to us through memories, flashes and fantasies. He devises energetic entities, and shows us how they flow through the fabric of collective consciousness over many generations in his native Thailand. His tools are never dogmatic, as he moves freely between different media and exhibition choices. In this interview, moderated by Volksbühne artistic director Chris Dercon, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk to us about his unique approach to his craft.
