From Detroit to New Orleans and via Memphis and New York to Los Angeles - Room Tone takes us on an exceptional road trip through the US; every city retaining its unicity. A trip that reveals the excesses of the American Dream and the emptiness of contemporary society. Romantic cityscapes and wide-open landscapes gain a bitter aftertaste due to textual excerpts and soundtracks from fascinating American films from the 1970s. Elsewhere, director Céline Baril plays the voices of the 1960s' protests including those of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. Recently shot excerpts, drawings and writing are served up sedately. The hard life that emerges from the images is only softened by the film's remarkable colours and the precise choices of image and sound.
