The most American of all film genres is the Western. They also made them in Italy, but a Western from Iran?
In the old city of Shiraz, a certain Negahdar Jamali has been making Westerns for 35 years. They are purely amateur, to be sure. Jamali is also an eccentric - in the most positive sense of the word. He’s a man with an unbridled enthusiasm for his hobby who also manages to get all his relatives and friends in front of the camera as Indians or bounty hunters.
Thirty-five years ago, his film activities must have been regarded as strange, but since the revolutionary changes in his country and the growing hatred of everything American, it is becoming increasingly unusual.
The cowboy filmmaker from Shiraz. Once upon a time, famous wine was made in Shiraz, until the country fell prey to prohibition. Fortunately, they still make Westerns.
