Visually impressive feature about a group of young delinquents who violently escape from youth prison and find themselves in the Argentine wilderness. The Wild Ones is very realistic in the opening scenes, but soon transcends time and place, with a sharp eye for the beauty of the landscape.
Words clearly play a less prominent role than images, distinguishing the solo directing debut by Alejandro Fadel from the films he wrote for Pablo Trapero (Leonera, Elefante blanco). Cameraman Julian Apezteguia is also from Trapero’s crew.
The first half of the film follows the four young men and a girl on their journey to an unknown destination. As a result of internal disagreements and accidents, the group falls apart, after which the story concentrates on the youngest of them. In the descent into an increasingly intangible and mythical world, fate brings the characters together briefly, after which they lose each other for good.
