Commissioned for the 2011 Singapore Biennale, the meaning of style qualifies as the shortest, most perfectly formed film in the Tiger Shorts competition. Shot with Malaysian skinheads in Penang, it’s a meditative fantasy on signs, signals and butterflies, leading to pointed reflections on ‘the relationship between British colonial history and popular culture in South-East Asia’, says its maker, and to quote Jose Da Silva: ‘Fuck, it’s beautiful.’
