From the extensive oeuvre of the film pioneer Georges Méliès, A Trip to the Moon (1902) is by far the best-known work. Méliès based the story on two popular novels from his time, The First Men in the Moon (1901) by H.G. Wells aand Jules Verne's De la terre à la lune (1865). The recently restored film can now be seen in colour.
