After Three Kings (1999), his action film about the Gulf War, director David O’Russell seemed to have disappeared for a while, but he has impressively put himself back on the map with The Fighter, his boxing drama which is based on a true story. The film, with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in the leading roles, was recently awarded two Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Christian Bale) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Melissa Leo) and has since been nominated for seven Oscars. Among other things for Best Film, Best Female and Male Supporting Roles, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
After severe drug addiction and a fifteen-year prison term, ex-professional boxer Dicky Eklund (Bale) is released and meets his younger half-brother Micky (Wahlberg) after years of silence. By now, the latter also aspires to a professional boxing career and Dicky readies him for the world title fight in a Rocky-like manner, but whether the cooperation can heal family ties is doubtful.
