A precise reconstruction of a minutely detailed and factual scientific police investigation. The thoroughness with which the film investigates the facts focuses on different and apparently secondary issues. In the first instance, the film maps out a disconcerting crime, but in the end it reveals the mentality of a complete community.
In a Dutch village, an eighty-year-old widow is murdered. The perverted modus operandi turns the crime into a national media event. It made the authorities decide to set up one of the first large-scale DNA investigations in the country. The men who were interrogated and investigated by the police are interrogated once again for the film and have to describe the dramatic events and try to put their feelings into words.
The systematic approach and the taut cutting of the statements turns the film into an exciting puzzle. The fact that the puzzle has in reality already been solved and the culprit found and sentenced surprisingly doesn't make any difference to the excitement of the film.
The title of the film refers to the moment when a DNA profile is found that is identical to the suspect material. The film reveals the fear of the men investigated that they might wrongly be matched with the culprit. A culprit who was so despised that they couldn't imagine him coming from their own community.
