It is 1903. The streets of New York’s Lower East Side are populated by pushcarts and horse-drawn carriages. A brief fragment of film from the time is minutely analysed by Jacobs. By carefully allowing the picture to run forwards and then backwards, a treasure trove of information is derived from the image that would otherwise be lost to the human eye. In this way the attitude and expression of the people and the ensemble of movements acquires depth and significance.
