Mum ’n’ Dad is a voyeuristic look into the life of an elderly couple in a flat somewhere in present-day Sarajevo. Its observations are sharp and sometimes painful and confronting.
The life of ‘mum and dad’ (this is how the couple address each other) is lonesome and has its own rituals: drinking coffee, playing cards, watching TV. The husband has suffered a stroke and although he is still physically strong, he has difficulty in communicating and with everyday tasks. The wife is a lively elderly lady who, after 50 years, is now using the husband’s disability to change things around in this old-fashioned, patriarchal family. She seems to be paying him back for those many years of marriage that were full of all the things that go on behind closed doors. The husband hates to see this happening and he opposes it in the only way he can: with physical force.
To take the subject to its deepest depths, director Faruk Loncarevic has chosen the form of a reality show for his first feature film. Using this voyeuristic and nowadays so popular TV genre allows him to unveil the most intimate realities of those non-romantic moments in life people prefer not to talk about. But unlike the TV genre, his protagonists are not young and beautiful. A daring and surprising experiment. (LC)
