Frame by Frame

Peter Tscherkassky spends months on end in the dark to create films frame by frame. With his manual labor, he avoids the traditional use of the film camera. Rather, his elegantly conceived films, like the CinemaScope Trilogy are made using techniques of contact printing and variable exposure to transfer found film into unexposed film stock, then manipulated and processed to create the final works. The result is that the image often exceeds the traditional film frame and thus a second, quasi invisible film exists. On the light boxes and monitors both versions of the film can be seen.
