The young Romanian immigrant Ioan lost his father during the revolution that led to the fall of Ceausescu. Despite the freedom his country has acquired, he can’t see any future for himself. He leaves for Italy to realise his modest dreams there. He meets the Italian Lionello, who has just been sacked as a cleaner at Termini Station. This 40something doesn’t want to appear unemployed and hence keeps up appearances. When Ioan rents a room in Lionello’s house, they try to make plans for the future together. And briefly it doesn’t look as if there are any problems on the horizon…
In a sober yet intense way, Carmine Amoroso films the quest of the two roaming men, who at first don’t seem destined for happiness. The film is not heavy for a moment and takes an unexpected turn when Ioan is noticed by a photographer who offers him an entirely unexpected career opportunity. Paradoxically, Lionello increasingly loses interest in his home country of Italy and decides that his quest will lead to a better and more stable life in Romania.
Director Carmine Amoroso: ‘I believe that cinema should also have a social function. This story aims to be a portrait of our consumer society’s marginalised denizens in a Europe in which profits are soaring, but so too are the ranks of those living below the threshold of poverty.’ (EH)
