The Lebanese artist Marwan Rechmaoui designed a map of Beirut city, engraved in thick, lusterless rubber. The result is a monochrome, rather macabre puzzle that invites a surveying gaze and at the same time suggests dangerous territory. The ground plan is remarkably big and flat. Rechmaoui radicallly leveled the topography of the city, to eradicate all hierarchical distinctions between higher and lower areas. This map is accessible for all visitors.
