'A bell ringing in a distant lavatory.' The Way Out is a Confucius-quoting flotsam of found footage and lost thoughts, never quite becoming either a compilation film or documentary. The film is instead a cinematic reincarnation of L. Voag's 1979 DIY cut-up of a concept album that imagined its own musical context. This is a parallel universe where pop music is made by modernist, serialist composers and the avant-garde is left to those on the fringes of acceptance. Luke Fowler is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow (www.themoderninstitute.com).
