AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL-DOEN AWARD This year is the fourth time that the International Film Festival Rotterdam has a competition for the best films related to human rights and human dignity. An international jury will judge some ten films selected for the competition on the basis of criteria such as the way in which the theme of human rights is represented, the uniqueness of the style, the personal involvement of the film maker, as well as the possibility to release the winning film in Dutch theatres. The public prize ceremony and screening of the winning film will be held on Human Rights Night, Wednesday evening 1 February. Amnesty International and the DOEN Foundation will present the director of the winning film with the Amnesty International-DOEN Award, consisting of a 5,000-euro grant. The film will also be distributed in the Netherlands. Amnesty International Film Awards are presented each year at eight different film festivals, among others Amsterdam (IDFA) and Berlin (Berlinale). Amnesty International is a worldwide organisation dedicated to compliance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. DOEN Foundation fund strives to make the world a liveable place. To this end, it provides funding to organizations and projects in the fields of Sustainable Development, Welfare and Culture. DOEN Foundation achieves its objective through the revenues it receives from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery. DOEN Foundation makes this award available because documentaries broaden our view of the world and promote social involvement. The Amnesty International-DOEN Award is a Movies that Matter project. The foundation Movies that Matter is a new collaboration between Amnesty International, the DOEN Foundation, the Hivos-NCDO Culture Fund and VSB-fonds. Movies that Matter uses cinema to affect and alert the public, opinion- and policymakers to violations of human rights and to stimulate the observance of these.
