A trilogy about several hot issues within Indonesian politics. Nugroho's approach is very individual and each part gets its own style and form. The first part is already familiar in Rotterdam: it was made as a contribution to the On the Waterfront programme of the 2001 festival. The film looks back from various angles on colonial history and the creation of modern Indonesia. The second part takes a documentary look at the autonomy of the Papuans, a subject that Nugroho also tackles in fictional form in his Birdman Tale. The third part takes a more essayist and reflective look at cultural and ethnic identity (an explosive subject in Indonesia). For this, Nugroho borrows examples from his own feature film oeuvre. Clarifying recycling. (GjZ)
