Zai Kuning makes music, visual art, theatre and also films. This versatility can be found in Riau in particular. At first sight, this is just a beautiful documentary. Kuning spent some time living with a family that belonged to the disappearing people of the Orang Laut, a nomadic fishing folk that lives around the islands of Riau in the Straits of Malakka, between Singapore and Sumatra. A second look and a second listen reveal just how special this film is. (GjZ)
