It may have taken a non-American (in this case the Spaniard Lluis Escartin) to make the American landscape look even more American. The beauty of decay and desolation as a set for a painful monologue about the decline of what seemed such a flourishing empire. The tramp-philosopher Johnson Frisco is not contradicted during his litany, but the images tell their own story.
