De la source à la mer is a real family production. It is directed by matriarch Pisla, who is also the subject of the story. The rest of the family works in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Respect for nature and pride in one's own culture are the focal points in this portrait of mother and grandmother Pisla, a Manouche woman who lives with her family in the French Alsace. While the family has not led a nomadic existence for a long time, every year the urge returns to travel to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. It's a journey from the source to the sea. The heart of Pisla is divided between her great love for the earth and life, and the sorrow at everything that is done to the earth. She also thinks back nostalgically to the past, when her people roamed the world as free `children of the wind'. A poor existence, but rich in warmth, beauty, music and above all lots of love.
