Whispering Sands is set on East Java and is a modest story of the love between a village girl and her possessive mother (Christine Hakim). The teenage Daya keeps trying to test her mother's strict rules and to extent them. Her mother, a single woman, is a midwife who sells traditional medicines on the side. The political situation makes her flee to a village in the desert area, where sand gets in everywhere. The lonely Daya often dreams that she sees her long lost father Agus again, a dream that eventually comes true when he returns penniless. Because she sees how happy he makes Daya, her mother allows him to come back home again. Agus tells Daya beautiful stories about his travels and the bond between the two of them gets closer. However the happiness she has just found does not last long. Agus becomes involved with a smooth loan shark and that has disastrous consequences for Daya's dream world.
