Just like the Chinese takeaway classic of the same name, Chop Suey is a tasty hotchpotch of a variety of delicious ingredients. The kitchen of the director and photographer Bruce Weber has yielded an elegantly filmed, loosely structured diary film, cut in a craftsmanlike way. We bump into the cabaret singer Francis Faye, actor Robert Mitchum, Weber's dogs, desert traveller Sir Wilfred Thesiger and wellknown faces from the world of fashion, including fashion guru Diana Vreeland. In addition, there is an important role for Peter Johnson, a photo model who was discovered by Weber in the Nineties. These days, Johnson models clothes for Lagerfeld, Versace and Ralph Lauren. The photographs that Weber took of Johnson in the craziest outfits and sets, changed him from a simple goodlooking guy into a real homoerotic icon.Jazz plays an important role in this lyrical and moving collage of personal passions, which is no surprise in view of the subject of Weber's successful documentary Let's Get Lost. In addition, Weber leaves through his old photo collection, that includes special and famous photos by Edward Steichen and Walker Evans.
