Guarda il cielo consists of three stories on the same theme - the way in which women try to keep or put their private life in balance - but each is set in a different period of last century. Stella lives in the countryside in the forties. Day in, day out, she works on the land so that one day she can realise her dream to buy a piece of land herself. But pregnancies keep getting in the way. Sonia is a student in Milan in the sixties. She is thinking about doing a course in Rome, but that would mean delaying her planned wedding, and her fiancé doesn't fancy that. The nineties: Silvia works as a telephony with a mail-order company. Her husband is chief of another department in the same company. Differences of opinion about work and trade unions start to enter their private life.Piergiorgio Gay shows that the modern era does not have exclusive rights to the problems sketched in his film, but that the way people cope with these dilemmas changes as time passes. The three stories form a stylistic unity, but they also connect well with the period in which they are set. For instance the first part is more sober, with earthy tints, while in the second part colour, emotion and the interaction between the characters are more in the foreground.
