Satya arrives in Bombay hoping to make his living there. A series of incidents brings him against his will into contact with the underworld, where he becomes a member of the feared Bheeku Mhatre gang. At the same time, a relationship unfolds with Vidya, a girl who does not know Satya's true identity. His love for her grows and he realises that his greatest desire is to lead a peaceful life with her. However his position in the underworld makes this impossible.Ram Gopal Varma always wondered when reading articles about gang wars where people like this came from and where they went. 'By the time I got down to writing the script, I could imagine the gang members as real people and then I realised I was on the point of discovering a whole new world.'The wonderful way in which the looming labyrinth of relationships is sketched, distinguishes the film from the average crime thriller. In India, the film was praised unanimously for its acting, the action scenes and the original style. Shot in the rainy season, the pouring rain gives the flashing guns a sombre glow. What also makes Satya special is the apparent discrepancy between the hard clashes of the underworld and the love scenes between Satya and Vidya with their honeyed songs.
