Hagen Trinker leads the normal life of a young urban vagabond, somewhere between adventure and misery, freedom and addiction, comedy and tragedy. He does not dream of returning to a bourgeois existence. His home is the street where he has found his 'family'. Tom who dreams of Cambridge, Edgar who is madly in love with the prostitute Liane, Edda who has lost all her illusions, the good-natured Gustl and the wise 'ambassador' who always sets an alarm clock, whatever. At night they seek shelter in the cellar of a building and during day they try to survive by stealing, begging and drinking. This group is joined by Judith (15) who has run away from home. She wants to get to know 'real life' and is fascinated by Hagen. She tries to attract his attention, but he continues to give the same advice: 'Go back to your parents.' In the end he falls for her spontaneity, but immediately gets into trouble for his relationship with a minor.Fette Welt tells a love story under the cold blue light of Munich, romantic, but of course never more than two steps from grey reality. It's about alcoholics, anarchists and street philosophers, but in their deepest aspirations they display general human truths: when they really have touched rock bottom, there is often something that gives new meaning and inspiration to an apparently hopeless existence.
