The many dogs that once guarded the Wall all got new bosses after the fall. After several years it turned out that the dogs had a better memory than the people. In Berlin so much has changed that no one knows exactly where the Wall ran, but the dogs still walk their guard route along a wall that has gone. The largest artifact of the Twentieth Century can only be seen on a film and is nowhere more tangible than in Jürgen Böttcher's documentary Die Mauer. He filmed in 1989 and 1990 as the Berliners used their bare hands and small hammers, before the demolition machines arrived, to hack out small pieces of the wall as a relic. In a personal and intimate way, Böttcher recorded emotions that now have become almost unthinkable. The documentary also provides a history in archive footage of the wall and the place it stood.
