Piero is a travelling salesman who is driving through the rough countryside of Sicily when he witnesses a Mafia murder. He reports what he has seen, but his honesty and feeling of duty are not rewarded, on the contrary: he finds himself and his family in a special police protection programme. Pietro's peaceful everyday life is completely disrupted. He regularly has to change his hiding place, he loses his job, the relationship with his wife gets difficult and he falls into a depression. When an arrested Mafioso decides to turn state's evidence, Piero's is suddenly much less important. He loses his police protection, despite the efforts of policeman Sandro who had become his 'guardian angel'. In the end he gives evidence at the trial and gets a new identity and a job abroad. But his life will never be the same again.Testimone a rischio looks at the typically Italian topical theme of the alert citizen who is frustrated time and again in his attempts to do anything about the violent and absurd expressions of the Mafia world. It is a smooth and unsentimental feature that manages to involve the viewer in the nasty events.
