In the late seventies, the old political regime in Taiwan came to an end. A period of great changes dawned. Lin-lang is a witness to her lover taking part in the great political struggle by standing up for a democratic party. Soon after he is persecuted and imprisoned. Devastated by rumours of his death, Lin-lang too becomes a radical advocate of human rights. She is arrested and sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment. When she is released, she is surprised to find out that her lover is still alive, is married and has a child. At the same time, her old comrades are confronting a new challenge. Lin-lang's life plunges into the depths when her love and her ideals seem lost. Director Hsu wanted to stand up for those fighting the good fight, not for their leaders. He wanted to dedicate his film to the people who surrendered themselves entirely to the struggle.
