Dramatic story about the love-hate relationship between two brothers, started by an actress who has only just recovered from her insanity. Unable to cope with a broken love-affair, the actress Yumiko ends up in a psychiatric hospital. Soon no one comes to see her any more; only the alcoholic novelist Akimoto remains faithful to her. When she recovers she moves in with Akimoto. Not because she feels anything for him, but because she has nowhere else to go. One day Yumiko sees a young tramp in the street. She takes care of this Yuji, who was castrated by his mother in a moment of insanity. Yuji reminds Yumiko of her once lost love. However he is unable to answer her love and asks his brother Koichi to go to bed with Yumiko in his place. Jealousy and suspicion however drive the brothers further and further apart. The writer Akimoto observes the bizarre relationship and borrows elements for his book. Sato Toshiki attended the last Rotterdam festival with his films Tandem, that was screened in the Pink Pictures from Japan programme. Sato has been called one of the four great pink directors. He has many porny films to his name but Lunatic is his first attempt to make an 'ordinary' film. It is Sato's ambition to continue making Japanese films as no one ever saw before.
