It is 1963. The village Xime is in the grip of optimism, because an abundant rice harvest is expected. Yet the widower Iala, father of Raul and Bedan, is worried. The colonial authorities are looking for Raul, who is studying to be a priest in Bissau. Bedan, the youngest son, challenges authority, teases everything and everyone and falls in love his father's fiancée. These are difficult times for his father Iala. When the time comes for Bedan's initiation, this ritual is abruptly interrupted by a group of soldiers. sketches the difficult transition from a Portuguese colony to a democracy - the war of independence took place between 1962 and 1974.
