Director made full use of his experiences making documentaries, when he made this realistic fairy-tale focusing on the conflicts between the traditional society of an Indonesian island and the modern world. He shows both the reality of the lonely life and fantasies of a nine-year-old boy, Lewa, whose only friend is his horse. Lewa has been given a Polaroid camera by a tourist and uses it to go in search of the meaning of the new reality acquired with his camera. He seeks an image of his mother, who had died in a bus accident. But in the wreck of the bus he only finds a Madonna poster.
