Sayed is a taxi-driver in Cairo, his wife has died and his handicapped son is being brought up by his mother-in-law. She has a severe illness and needs an operation fast, but for that Sayed needs to pay a bribe. Horeya works as chamber-maid in a cheap hotel and lives with her sister in an old house in a working-class area of Cairo. As a result of an earthquake, the house has to be done up so Horeya needs two hundred pounds - just as much as Sayed. On New Year's Eve they meet and set out together in search of the money they need. They discover a strange world that is a reflection of everyday life in Egypt, and they discover each other.
