Le Buttane

Original filmed portrait of seven prostitutes, male and female, from Palermo, divided into chronologically distinct chapters based on short stories by the director himself. Grimaldi wanted this film to be a protest: 'These days Italian film production is completely dependent on television money and that is very dangerous.' Making films is determined by two compulsory choices: it has to be in colour and may not comprise scenes that may make the film unsuitable for young viewers - and they are always sexual, violence is not covered by censorship.' Thanks to a state grant for artistic and culturally-important films and the efforts of all its cast and crew, Grimaldi for once did not have to comply with these demands.
