Raúl Ruiz is a master in evoking surrealist dream worlds and he does so again with verve in this film. Protagonist Pierre is a middle-aged man. He works as guide, but during a guided tour in the city, he suddenly lapses into silence. His memory deserts him. He is taken home and there meets the young man Antoine, a stranger to him. Antoine tells him they had a date and invites him to dinner in a restaurant. Pierre hears about Léda, his lover, who has hung herself. He remembers a meeting with Léda when he was selling encyclopedias house to house. Ruiz evokes the memory as a black & white film within the colour film.
