A tragi-comedy filled with colourful scenes which show the dreams and also the realistic limits for the people living a marginal existence in Cairo. Violets are Blue is filled with stories about colourful people afflicted with dreams that will probably never come true.In his youth Ahmed worked as an errand-boy in a palace. He has now been sent away and returns to the poor neighbourhood where he lives with his aunt. His great dream is to escape this poor life, just as his friend Ali Boby has done. Abbas and Sayed, two friends whom Ahmed has know for a long time, share his dream, but he feels inhibited by their way of life. They live from one day to the next and don't seem to have any ideals. Abbas is mad about women and steals all kinds of things, however insignificant. Sayed works in a laboratory where they perform vivisection on rabbits. He is sensitive, sentimental and likes to listen to the voice of the famous Egyptian singer Abdel Haleem Hafez. The three youths form a second-rate band for parties and weddings. When his old friend Ali Boby turns up unexpectedly at a party, Ahmed's life briefly picks up speed.
