Cinema version of the stylish three-part television series based on the novel by Simon Vestdijk about long-term revenge. The film focuses on the acting and the art direction. The story is set in a provincial town in the fifties and explains how the lawyer Hendrik Grond reacts to the one-off adultery of his beautiful wife Olga, whom he catches at home in the arms of an older colleague, much to his dismay. Because the two 'culprits' don't know they have been caught, Grond is able to keep the humiliation to himself. He decides to have his revenge. Several people accidentally become involved in the retaliation; a cruel and refined psychological drama is the result.The film portrays the emotions and thoughts of the young lawyer and his revenge over several months. The murder of the seducer eventually leads to an unexpected dénouement.
