How long before software writes better thrillers than best-selling authors? Will we be able to tell the difference between artificial pop music and that of real composers? The software company DeepMind uses the ancient Chinese board game of Go to test their artificial-intelligence algorithms. They invited European Champion Fan Hui to come to London and to his great surprise he loses five consecutive games. The company then heads to Seoul to challenge Lee Sedol, who holds 18 international titles.
The cerebral clash develops into a hotly mediatised match and the documentary primarily records the emotions of players, nerds and hysterical journalists in an effective way. Google (DeepMind’s owner) could not have conceptualised more effective advertising for the software it uses to take increasingly invasive control of our daily lives.
